The more I read about and use on-the-spot formative assessments in my own classroom, the more I see how these quick checks of understanding should be the driving force behind instruction.
Each student's approach to learning is unique, and if you're not adapting to it during instruction, then you won't really know what they don't know until it's too late to go back and address shortcomings in a meaningful way.
